The Legend Of The Blue Butterfly

The legend of the blue butterfly

This oriental legend of the blue butterfly tells that many years ago a man became a widower and had to take responsibility for his two daughters.

The two girls were very curious, intelligent and always had a desire to learn. They constantly hurled questions at their father to satisfy their hunger for knowledge. Sometimes her father was able to answer wisely, but in many cases his daughters’ questions prevented him from giving them a correct or convincing answer.

Seeing the restlessness of the two girls, he decided to send them on vacation to live and learn from a sage,  who lived on top of a hill. The sage was able to answer all the questions that the girls threw at him, without even hesitating.

However, the two sisters decided to trap the sage to measure his wisdom. One night, both began to devise a plan: to propose to the sage a question that he was not able to answer.

– How can we deceive the sage? What question could we ask him that he wouldn’t be able to answer? – asked the younger sister to the older one.

– Wait here, I’ll show you – said the eldest.

The older sister left the hill and returned after an hour. Her apron was closed like a coat, hiding something.

– What you got there? – Asked the younger sister.

The older sister put her hand on her apron and showed the girl a beautiful blue butterfly.

– How wonderful! What are you going to do with her?

– This will be our weapon to ask the trap question to the master. We’ll go look for it and I’ll hide this butterfly in my hand. Then I will ask the sage whether the butterfly in my hand is alive or dead. If he says he’s alive, I’ll shake my hand and kill him. If you say you’re dead, I’ll set you free. So, whatever your answer, your answer will always be wrong.

Accepting the older sister’s proposal, the girls went to look for the sage.

– Master – said the eldest – Can you tell us if the butterfly in my hand is alive or dead?

The sage replied with a mischievous smile: “It’s up to you, it’s in your hands.”

The blue butterfly and our reality

Our present and our future are exclusively in our hands. We must never blame anyone if something fails. If we lose something, or if we gain something, we are the ones responsible.

The blue butterfly represents our lives. It’s just up to you to create the life you want.
